Abstract

Electrical insulators are important for maintaining the stability and safety of current in electrical systems by preventing the flow of wild currents that can damage the device or spark a fire. On the other hand, the increase in organic waste, including eggshells from the food industry, creates opportunities to use this material as an insulator composite. This study aims to test the resistance of eggshell-based insulator composites to high stresses by using resin as a hardener. The method carried out in this study is by applying AC voltage that increases gradually in the insulator until the breakthrough voltage occurs. The voltage is increased at a constant time rate (120 kV per second) to the point where the insulator fails or breaks down, the insulator is tested in wet conditions. The results showed that conventional insulators failed at a voltage of 20 kV, while eggshell composites survived up to 25 kV. This shows that eggshell insulators have better dielectric properties than traditional insulators.
